Engineering major Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has received a supply order from the Indian Army’s Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) for the overhaul, upgrade and obsolescence management of the indigenous Pinaka Multi-Rocket Launcher Systems.
The company disclosed the development in a stock exchange filing, describing the engagement as a significant step towards long-term lifecycle support of frontline, Made-in-India artillery platforms.
Focus on lifecycle support
The programme is aimed at addressing component obsolescence, upgrading critical sub-systems and ensuring sustained technical support for the Army’s Base Workshops. According to L&T, the initiative represents a growing shift from periodic maintenance towards a structured, lifecycle-based approach to sustaining complex defence systems.
Such lifecycle management is increasingly seen as essential as military platforms grow more electronics-intensive and technologically sophisticated, making long-term support and upgrades as important as initial procurement.
Public-private collaboration
The project is also expected to reinforce India’s public-private partnership model in defence sustenance. It brings together the Indian Army’s in-house technical expertise and a domestic private original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to support operational readiness of artillery systems already in service.
Under the arrangement, the 510 Army Base Workshop (ABW) of the Corps of EME will carry out the overhaul and upgrade of key electronic systems, drawing on its extensive operational and maintenance experience. L&T, as the OEM, will supply critical spares and support the modernisation of sub-systems, while providing technical assistance and quality oversight.
Pilot phase and rollout
In the initial phase, L&T and 510 ABW will jointly conduct a pilot overhaul of the Pinaka launcher and the associated Battery Command Post. Following the successful completion of this phase, the remaining systems will be upgraded by 510 ABW, with L&T continuing its role in supplying spares and technical support.
The partnership underscores a broader push to strengthen domestic capabilities for sustaining and upgrading India’s indigenous defence platforms over their full operational lifespan.
