Indian equity markets traded marginally lower, with technology stocks leading the decline despite gains in banking and oil and gas shares.

The Nifty 50 fell 0.2% to 24,436, while the Sensex declined by the same margin to 77,966. The Nifty IT index dropped 1.5%, while the Bank Nifty rose 0.8%. The auto index slipped 0.3% and the FMCG index was little changed.

Asian markets were mixed. Japan’s Nikkei gained 2%, while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng fell 1% and Shanghai’s benchmark declined 0.8%. In the US, the S&P 500 rose 0.3% and the Nasdaq gained 0.5% in the previous session.

Among individual stocks, Astral, Lenskart and Gujarat Fluorochemicals were among the notable gainers, while Shree Cements and AIA Engineering featured among the decliners.

Corporate earnings and developments

Tata Motors reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 25.60bn for the first quarter of FY27, up 83.3% from Rs 13.97bn a year earlier. Revenue from operations increased 19% to Rs 206.67bn.

Lenskart Solutions recorded a 182.3% year-on-year rise in quarterly profit to Rs 2.28bn. Revenue grew 33.6% to Rs 22.14bn, while EBITDA increased 61.3% to Rs 5.89bn. The company said its product margin crossed 70% for the first time.

CAMS and IIT Madras have renewed their partnership to support innovation in artificial intelligence, digital payments, blockchain and cybersecurity.

Poonawalla Fincorp received approval to issue listed, secured and redeemable non-convertible debentures worth up to Rs 7.50bn through private placement. The securities are proposed to be listed on the BSE.

Economic developments

India’s consumer inflation rose to 4.45% in July 2026 from 4.38% in June, according to the figures provided. Food and transport prices were among the main contributors, while housing and recreation inflation remained subdued.

The government is revamping its Gold Monetisation Scheme to encourage jewellers to mobilise household gold holdings. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on imported gold, which cost India an estimated $71.9bn in FY26.

US inflation eased to 3.4% in July, while core inflation fell to 2.5%. Germany’s inflation rate rose to 2.8%, driven partly by higher energy costs.
