Indian fintech company PayU has announced the rollout of Apple Pay across its merchant network, bringing Apple’s contactless payment service to lakhs of merchants in India.
Apple Pay allows users to make payments using compatible iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad devices without sharing their physical card details with merchants. The service can be used for in-store, in-app and online purchases.
For in-store payments, customers can double-click the side button on their iPhone, authenticate using Face ID, Touch ID or a device passcode, and hold the device near a compatible payment terminal.
PayU said its unified checkout platform will allow merchants to offer Apple Pay alongside other payment options. The company will also support merchants with technical integration and compliance requirements.
“PayU is proud to bring Apple Pay to lakhs of Indian merchants, enabling a new era of secure and seamless authentication solutions for digital payments,” said Nikhil Mehta, senior vice-president, partnerships and business head – growth initiatives at PayU.
Apple Pay uses a Device Account Number instead of storing the user’s actual card number on the device or Apple’s servers. The payment information is encrypted and stored in the device’s Secure Element, a dedicated chip designed to protect sensitive financial data.
Transactions are also authenticated through the user’s device and use a one-time dynamic security code, adding an additional layer of protection.
Apple Pay can be used on iPhone and iPad for purchases in apps and on websites through Safari, while support for Mac is expected to be introduced soon.
Users can add eligible cards through the Wallet app on their Apple devices. Once a card is added, payments can be made without repeatedly entering card or billing details.
Customers will continue to receive rewards and other benefits associated with their eligible bank cards when using Apple Pay.
